Mario Luigi Superstar Saga Plus is a role-playing game in the Mario franchise. It's the third game of its kind, following Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario. Unlike those games, Mario Luigi Superstar Saga Plus has a light-hearted and whimsical story with a focus on comedy and humor. In the game, you control both Mario and Luigi at the same time as they explore the world, battle enemies, gain experience, and find new items and gear. The battle system is different from traditional role-playing games, with a greater emphasis on timing and special attacks called Action Commands.

During the game, you control Mario and Luigi together. The directional pad moves one brother, while the other follows closely. You can switch between Mario and Luigi using the Start button. At the beginning of the game, they can jump independently, and as you progress, they gain access to hammers and various other techniques. For example, Luigi's hammer can shrink Mario to fit through small gaps, and Mario can stand on Luigi's shoulders to hover across large gaps. Enemies roam the world, and touching them triggers a battle. If you hit an enemy while exploring, you can deal damage or stun them at the start of the battle.
Battles in Superstar Saga are turn-based. They can attack by jumping on enemies, using hammers, or utilizing special abilities they unlock during the game. Jump attacks can hit enemies from above but won't work on spiked or flame-covered creatures. Hammer attacks work on ground enemies but miss flying ones. Each brother also has an elemental hand attack (fire for Mario and thunder for Luigi), which can be effective or ineffective against certain enemies.
Similar to previous Mario RPG games, players can time button presses to enhance their attacks, such as getting an extra jump or increasing hammer power. When enemies attack, the brothers can jump or use their hammers to dodge the attacks and counter if timed correctly.
Throughout the game, players can unlock special combination attacks called Bros. Attacks, which require cooperation between Mario and Luigi. These attacks consume Bros. Points (BP). Players can also use items like mushrooms for healing, peppers to boost stats, and 1UP mushrooms to revive fallen brothers.
Defeating enemies earns experience points that help the brothers level up and improve their stats. Players can choose to increase specific attributes each time they level up. They can also equip new gear or badges with special abilities to further enhance their stats.
