Brutal Mario World

Brutal Mario World

Brutal Mario World is a platform video game where you control Mario on a mission to save Princess Peach and Dinosaur Land from Bowser and the Koopalings, the game' main villains. The gameplay is similar to previous Super Mario games, with the goal of reaching the goalpost at the end of each level.

Brutal Mario World is widely regarded as one of the best games in the series and is considered one of the greatest video games ever made. It has sold over twenty million copies worldwide. The game's success even led to an animated television series with the same name.

Power-ups

In addition to power-ups from previous games, such as the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower, Brutal Mario World introduces a new power-up called the Cape Feather. This power-up gives Mario a cape, allowing him to fly, glide, and use it as a sail. The game also introduces the ability to store an extra power-up in a box at the top center of the screen. For example, if you collect a Fire Flower or Cape Feather, a Super Mushroom will appear in the box. Collecting a star power-up grants invincibility, protecting you from enemies, but not from falling into pits or running out of time. If Mario gets hit by an enemy, the stored item in the box will automatically drop, or you can manually release it.

Meet Yoshi

Brutal Mario World introduces Yoshi, a friendly dinosaur that Mario can ride. Yoshi can eat most enemies, and if he swallows a Koopa or its shell, he can spit it out to defeat other enemies. However, if Yoshi holds the shell for too long, he will swallow it, rendering it useless. Different colored shells provide Yoshi with different abilities. For example, a blue shell enables him to fly, a yellow shell creates dust clouds that defeat nearby enemies, and a red shell allows him to shoot three fireballs. There are also hidden blue, yellow, and red Yoshis that can be obtained by finding their eggs in the Star World areas and feeding them enemies or power-ups.

The Secret Star Road Routes

While the main objective is to navigate through seven worlds to complete the game, you can take advantage of secret Star Road routes to complete it more quickly. To access hidden worlds, you need to find keys scattered throughout the game's levels. Once you find a key, you can use it to unlock new levels or access Star Roads. Exploring these secret stages can lead to other hidden areas, like the Special World. Completing the Special Zone changes the appearance of some enemies and alters the color scheme of the overworld map.

The Plot of Brutal Mario World

The plot of Brutal Mario World revolves around Mario and Luigi going on vacation with Princess Toadstool (Peach) to Dinosaur Land, a prehistoric-themed world filled with dinosaurs and enemies. However, their vacation is interrupted when Bowser kidnaps Princess Toadstool. Mario and Luigi join forces with Yoshi, a young dinosaur who informs them that Bowser's Koopalings have also captured his dinosaur friends. Determined to rescue the princess and Yoshi's friends, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi embark on a journey through Dinosaur Land, defeating the Koopalings along the way. Their adventure leads them to Bowser's Castle, where they engage in a final battle with Bowser, defeating him and saving Princess Toadstool, bringing peace back to Dinosaur Land.

How to play

In Brutal Mario World, you control either Mario or Luigi in a 2D side-scrolling platform game. The gameplay is familiar to fans of earlier Super Mario games like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3, but it introduces new elements. Along with running and jumping, you can fly or float using power-ups like the Cape Feather and P-Balloon, and execute a new Spin Jump move. The game features a total of 96 level exits.

The game consists of two screens: an overworld map and side-scrolling courses. The overworld map shows an overhead view of the current world and offers different paths leading to a castle, action panels, fortresses, ghost houses, and other map icons. These paths allow you to choose different routes to reach your goal. The majority of the game takes place in linear levels filled with obstacles and enemies, where you must navigate and overcome challenges by running, jumping, and defeating enemies.

You start with a certain number of lives, but they can be lost if you come into contact with enemies while small, fall into pits, get crushed, touch lava, or run out of time. If you run out of lives, the game ends, but you can continue from a recent save point by selecting "Continue." Each world has a final stage with a boss to defeat, including fortresses controlled by the Koopalings and a castle where you battle Bowser in the last world. Brutal Mario World also offers multiplayer mode, allowing two players to take turns navigating the overworld map and accessing stage levels, with one player controlling Mario and the other controlling Luigi.
